 The Department of Bulgarian Language, Literature and Art (BLA) is the successor of two departments. One dates back to 1982, when by order of the rector, the Department of Bulgarian Language was founded, which became the main unit of the new Faculty for Foreign Students. Its first leader was Prof. Rusi D. Rusev, PhD. The department is one of the four specialized departments in the country and has 30 teachers who teach foreign students in Bulgarian, who, under state agreements, study in four higher education institutions in Bulgaria.

  In 1994, by a decision of the Academic Council, the Department of Bulgarian Language at the FCS merged with the Department of Bulgarian Language at the former Secondary Institute for Kindergarten and Primary Teachers, which existed from the 1966/1967 school year. The newly formed department unites teachers from both units and is named the Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature, which becomes part of the new academic structure - Faculty of Pedagogy, uniting specialists from the field of pedagogical, historical and linguistic sciences. In 2000, the Department of Bulgarian Language and Literature merged with the Department of Music and Fine Arts and was named the Department of Bulgarian Language, Literature and Art. The Head of the Department is Assoc.Prof.  Dimitrina Tsoneva, PhD - until 2014, and then until the end of 2019. The Department is headed by Prof. Yana Pometkova, PhD; from 2020, the head of the BLLA Department is Assoc. Prof. M. Dushkova, PhD.

 Today, the Department of Bulgarian Language, Literature and Art is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Education, it is responsible for the education of students from the specialty Bulgarian language and history and takes part in the education of the specialties Preschool and Primary School Pedagogy, Primary School Pedagogy and Foreign Language, Social pedagogy, Law. The Master's programs Cultural Tourism, Guided Tours and Education, Career Counseling and Development, Linguistics in Primary School (English), Linguistics in Junior High School (English), Modern Bulgarian Studies and Education are also open to the Department.

 The department conducts training in two accredited doctoral programs: Bulgarian Language and General and Comparative Linguistics.

During the 2017 academic year, the Department of Bulgarian Language, Literature and Art celebrates an impressive anniversary - the 50th anniversary of its establishment! On this occasion, the collective monograph "50 years of the Department of Bulgarian language, literature and art - traditions, scientific research and achievements" was published and solemnly presented to the academic community and the Ruse public.

 For its dedicated work, the Department received well-deserved awards:

  • On 24th , May, .2017, the Department of Bulgarian Language, Literature and Art received the prestigious award of the Municipality of Ruse in the Education and Science section - "RUSE" AWARD 2017.
  • On the occasion of November 1 - the Day of the People's Awakeners, again in 2017, the BELI Department was awarded for its active activity with a Certificate from the Union of Scientists - Ruse.
  • From February 2022, the department "Bulgarian language, literature and art" (BLA) is renamed to the department "Bulgarian language, literature, history and art" (BLHA)
