The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Education (former Faculty of Pedagogy) was founded with a Decree № 413 of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers of 11.10.1994.
The Faculty has 36 study halls, 8 computer rooms, laboratory for psychological tests, puppet theatre, exhibition hall, museum of pedagogical education in Ruse, study and sports centre, library. Over 800 students study in this Faculty in the following Bachelor degree programmes, accredited with the highest grade by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency:
- Computer sciences;
- Informatics and information technologies in business;
- Financial mathematics;
- Pedagogy of education in Mathematics and Informatics;
- Bulgarian language and History;
- Pre-school and elementary school education;
- Elementary school education with a foreign language;
- Social pedagogy.
In the Faculty students can study in one of the following Master degree programmes:
- Informatics;
- Software engineering;
- Mathematical modelling in engineering;
- Information technologies in publishing;
- Information technologies in Mathematics and Informatics education;
- Informatics and information technologies in education;
- Information and education technologies;
- Modern education technologies in kindergarten and elementary school;
- Pedagogical prevention of crime and probation practices;
- Pre-school and elementary school education (for university graduates);
- Social and pedagogical activities;
- Social and pedagogical work with children and families;
- Linguodidactics in elementary school (English language);
- Linguodidactics in middle school (English language).
The Faculty has the following PhD degree programmes accredited:
- Bulgarian language in the professional field 2.1 Philology from the field of higher education 2. Humanitarian sciences (together with Silistra Branch of the University of Ruse);
- Differential equations, professional field 4.5 Mathematics from the field of higher education 4. Natural sciences, mathematics and informatics;
- Informatics in the professional field 4.6 Informatics from the field of higher education 4. Natural sciences, mathematics and informatics;
- History of Bulgaria in professional field 2.2. History and archeology from the field of higher education;
2. Social sciences; - Mathematical modelling and mathematical applications in professional field 4.5 Mathematics from the field of higher education 4. Natural sciences, mathematics and informatics;
- Methods of education /in fields and types of sciences/: Mathematics; Informatics and information technologies; physics in professional field 1.3. Pedagogy of education in ..., field of higher education 1. Pedagogical sciences;
- General and comparative linguistics in professional field 2.1 Philology from the field of higher education 2. Humanitarian sciences (together with FBM);
- Theory of education in professional field 1.2. Pedagogy in the field of higher education 1. Pedagogical sciences.
There are four departments in the structure of the Faculty: Bulgarian Language, Literature and Arts; Informatics and Information Technologies; Mathematics; Pedagogy, Psychology and History.
Lecturers from the Faculty participate in international projects with colleagues from Greece, Great Britain, Russia and Italy and work under joint programmes, related to research and exchange of lecturers and students with universities from many countries such as Australia, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, Greece, Estonia, Israel, Spain, Canada, Cyprus, China, Kirea, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the USA, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Hungary, etc.
The Faculty participates in the organisation of different forums such as the International conference "Numerical Methods and Applications", competitions and Olympiads in mathematics, computational linguistics, computer mathematics, informatics and information technologies. Many students have been awarded in these and other competitions, and they participate in international conferences, workshops and intensive summer schools.
There are three research units with the Faculty:
- The Centre of folklore and literature "St. Dimitar Basarbovski", working in the field of folklore, ethnology, ethno linguistics, ethno semiotics and literature studies;
- Student research society "Academician Mihail Arnaudov", which regularly publishes the results from the research of its members;
- Research laboratory on the problems of higher pedagogical education, for researching the quality of the study process and aligning it to European educational standards.
